Willow Creek's 50th Anniversary Comes with Reflections on the Unraveling of the One-Time 'Church of the Future'

Willow Creek Community Church, a multi-campus church, in South Barrington, Illinois is celebrating its 50th anniversary this weekend amid a history of significant changes and challenges. According to Church Leaders, Willow Creek became a model for seeker-friendly services, prompting an early article saying, "We have seen the future of religion. And it is slick."

“Over the past five decades, we’ve navigated challenges, embraced growth, and witnessed countless defining moments—all as part of the beautiful story God has been weaving through Willow,” Willow Creek stated on Instagram. “From highs and lows to breakthroughs and growing pains, every step has been marked by His faithful presence—writing stories of redemption, healing, purpose, and life-changing faith.

“Whether you’ve been here from the beginning or just found your seat, you are part of the story,” the church added. “And as we look back in gratitude, we’re also looking ahead to celebrate the story God is still writing in and through us!”

Founded in 1975, Willow Creek grew to become one of the most influential churches in the U.S. with a modern seeker friendly approach to how church is conducted, including pastors in jeans, video screens, contemporary worship music, and multimedia sermons, Religion News Service reported. At its peak, Willow Creek drew over 25,000 people every weekend and has had a broad impact through its volunteerism, leadership training, and its Global Leadership Summit.

The church, however, has also faced a crisis when its founder, Bill Hybels, was alleged of sexual misconduct in 2018. Subsequently, there were more leadership resignations and changes took place as more women came forward. Willow Creek faced financial strain and decline in attendance during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In recent years, Willow Creek experienced a comeback following the appointment of its current senior pastor, Shawn Williams as well as Willow Care Center which includes a grocery store, a car repair ministry, dental and legal clinics and other services.

The 50th anniversary celebration will take place over a 2 day event (October 11 and 12) at the South Barrington campus.
