Suppose…

Suppose a study came out that showed that 40% of college faculties opposed hiring black people – the outrage would be huge.  Suppose a study came out that revealed that 25% of humanities professors think there should be a campaign to remove all female professors – there would be civil rights investigations, protests, and probably vandalism.  Yet apparently, being a Trump supporter is worthy of such prejudice and bigotry.

Black professors outnumber their Republican colleagues at 11 elite higher education institutions including Harvard, Princeton, and Yale.

Roughly 40 percent of college faculty would “oppose hiring a Trump supporter.”

A quarter of faculty in social sciences and humanities departments would “support a campaign” to remove colleagues for expressing conservative views “in at least one of four topic areas.”

These are just some of the issues flagged in a new report from the America First Policy Institute published this month, painting a picture on how higher education is more polarized than ever.

Yeah, I know – colleges – home of the most educated stupidity imaginable.  But that is not what really gets to me.  My youth was consumed with lessons about “not judging a book by its cover” and other such euphemisms designed to teach us that situations were far more complex than we might imagine.  A black person was not, of necessity, stupid and suitable only for manual labor.  A female was not, of necessity, “born to breed.”  Oh and just because a person voted in a particular fashion it did not mean that everything they thought and did was anathema.

Whatever blogging chops I have were born of fighting precisely this kind of prejudice against Mitt Romney, who most normative Christians assumed was somehow impaired because he was Mormon.  After almost a decade of intense reading, studying and interaction I can tell you two very important things.  One, while Mormon theology is by normative Christian standards heterodox, the average Mormon behaves in a more Christian fashion than the average normative church attender.  Two,  Mitt Romney was a lot of things, but impaired by his faith was not one of them.  To dismiss Romney as a candidate based solely on his faith was, simply prejudicial.  To reject someone as a colleague based solely on the basis of a single vote or political affiliation is equally prejudicial.

To permit such prejudice to roam free in our college and university faculties is to undo decades of effort to remove prejudice and bigotry.

I guess it’s time to go back to the drawing board.

And now, the weekly leftovers…

Iran’s malevolence knows no bounds and they are without reason.  Let’s get this over with – crush them.  It’ll help the party, the nation and the world.

This is a crime against humanity.  Books may be outdated tech, but they are to be cherished.  I have tools in my woodshop that once belonged to my grandfather and have been replaced by far better tools.  Yet every now and then I have had to break one out because it does something the fancy new tools just can not.  So it shall be with books.

And somehow, the California keeps getting things wrong…

The dearth of energy California faces is quite serious.  The federal government probably needs to step in.

Given the results of the wildfires a year and a half ago – this is the smartest thing I have heard come out of L.A. in a long time.  Too bad they’ll screw it up.

California, health food capital of the world – oops.

Oh, of course.

Homelessness in L.A.  Some people claim Mayor Karen Bass doesn’t get it.  Oh, she gets its.  It’s the greatest source of graft and corruption this democracy has ever seen.  Money flows from government to some sort of 401(c)(3) that then promotes more homelessness so more money can flow.  Oh yeah, and some of that money gets kickbacked to those L.A. officials through various and nefarious channels.
