Grand Canyon University is reversing an earlier controversial decision and is now extending an invitation to Ben Shapiro to come speak on campus later this year.

That's according to a statement released yesterday by the Phoenix-based Christian university.

The announcement comes days after GCU canceled a visit from the conservative commentator, which was met with immediate and scathing criticism. Officials say the invite would have Shapiro come visit sometime in the spring.

However, Shapiro has now rejected the invitation, after GCU said it wouldn't work with the Young America’s Foundation, the group Shapiro uses to coordinate his speeches on college campuses.

GCU blamed the conservative group for creating a negative publicity storm for the university.
