Montana is the ninth U.S. state with a measles outbreak. The U.S. has 800 measles cases as of Friday. Texas is up to nearly 600 of those cases. Two children and an adult have died from measles-related illnesses. Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Oklahoma, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New Mexico have active measles outbreaks. Measles is caused by a highly contagious virus that’s airborne and spreads easily when an infected person breathes, sneezes or coughs. It is prevented by vaccines. Measles cases also have been reported in Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont and Washington.
U.S. Vice President JD Vance has held talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as New Delhi looks to avoid U.S. tariffs, negotiate a bilateral trade deal with Washington and strengthen ties with the Trump administration. Vance, who is on a largely personal four-day visit to India, met Modi at his residence in New Delhi on Monday. Modi's office said the two leaders “reviewed and positively assessed the progress in various areas of bilateral cooperation." The U.S. is India’s largest trading partner and the two countries are now holding negotiations aiming to seal a bilateral trade agreement this year.
A slow-moving, active storm system has brought heavy rain, large hail and tornadoes to parts of Texas and Oklahoma and left three people dead. Severe weather warnings lingered into Easter Sunday across parts of the south-central and Midwest U.S. Police in Moore, Oklahoma, say high waters stranded two cars Saturday evening, and one car was swept away under a bridge. Police say they were able to rescue some people, but a woman and 12-year-old boy were found dead. Officials in Hughes County say the storm killed one person after a tornado touched down in Spaulding, Oklahoma.
Four House Democrats are visiting El Salvador in a bid to support Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a man whom the Trump administration deported to a notorious Salvadoran prison. While administration officials have acknowledged that the decision to deport Abrego Garcia was done in error, they have said they have no power to return him to the country despite a Supreme Court ruling calling on the government to do so. The quartet’s trip comes after Sen. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland traveled to El Salvador last week. He met Abrego Garcia and Salvadoran officials.
A Delta Air Lines airplane caught fire on Monday before it was supposed to take off at a central Florida airport, forcing the evacuation of passengers, airport officials said.
There were no reports of any injuries during the fire on the plane at Orlando International Airport, Delta said in a statement.
The engine fire broke out on Delta Air Lines Flight 1213 while the plane was at the ramp before a scheduled departure from Orlando to Atlanta late Monday morning, airport officials said on social media.
The passengers were evacuated, and the airport's rescue and firefighting team responded, the airport's statement said.
The Airbus A330 aircraft had 282 customers, 10 flight attendants and two pilots, according to Delta.
“Delta flight crews followed procedures to evacuate the passenger cabin when flames in the tailpipe of one of the aircraft’s two engines were observed,” Delta said in a statement.
Maintenance teams will examine the aircraft in an effort to determine the cause of the fire, Delta said.
The Vatican says cause of Pope Francis' death was a cerebral stroke that led to a coma and irreversible heart failure.
Pope Francis died Monday at age 88. The first Latin American pontiff charmed the world with his humble style and concern for the poor. But he alienated conservatives with critiques of capitalism and climate change. From his election, the Argentine-born Jorge Mario Bergoglio signaled a different papacy, embracing refugees and the downtrodden, especially following the troubled tenure of Pope Benedict XVI. But conservatives grew increasingly upset with Francis’ progressive bent, outreach to LGBTQ+ Catholics and crackdown on traditionalists. He badly botched a notorious case of clergy sexual abuse in 2018. Bells tolled in church towers across Rome on Monday after the announcement.
Tributes to Pope Francis are pouring in from around the world. The Vatican announced the pontiff’s death on Monday at age 88. Many recalled his legacy as the first pope from Latin America, and the first Jesuit to reach the pinnacle of church hierarchy.
Pope Francis passed away early on Easter Monday. The Pope was known for a more progressive world view. Will the next head of the catholic church be more conservative leaning?
