Prosecutors say Governor Rubén Rocha and others conspired with cartel leaders to facilitate the trafficking of large quantities of drugs into the U.S. in exchange for political support and bribes. The case, unsealed in New York, alleges the officials used their positions to protect cartel operations and interfere with law enforcement efforts. Rocha has denied the allegations, calling them politically motivated and an attack on Mexico’s sovereignty. The indictment could strain relations between the United States and Mexico as both countries continue efforts to combat cartel-related violence and drug trafficking.
